Grain-Free Diets and the FDA

Recently, the FDA issued an updated statement regarding it's ongoing investigation of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and it's possible association with grain-free diets.

At this point in time, we are not certain of the exact causal relationship between grain-free and/or high legume diets in atypical dog breeds with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). If there is not a clinical reason (i.e. food allergies or gastrointestinal upset) for use of a limited ingredient, grain-free, unique protein source (kangaroo, alligator, bison, etc.) diet, we would suggest using alternative diets. For the time being, we have discontinued carrying grain- free diets in our office. If you would like to read more on the current FDA statement, click here. If you would like a recommendation on an alternate pet food for your pet, please email us at or speak with the veterinarian at your pet's next appointment.
